Part-Time School Nurse
Clearway School is a small, private special education school serving middle and high school students with learning disabilities. We are seeking a knowledgeable, organized, and collaborative Part-Time School Nurse to oversee student health services, maintain required health documentation, and serve as a resource to students, staff, families, and administrators.
This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced nurse looking for a flexible, limited-hour school-based position within a small, collaborative school community.
The position averages approximately 8–10 hours per month, with additional hours during key transition periods, particularly June, August, and September. The School Nurse will also receive a $200 monthly stipend for phone availability during school hours to provide consultation regarding urgent student medical needs.
Responsibilities:
The School Nurse will collaborate with school administration, staff, families, healthcare providers, and the school physician to support student health and ensure that Clearway's health services meet applicable state requirements.
Responsibilities Include:
- Review student medical and health information prior to admission and at the beginning of each school year.
- Ensure student health records are complete and current, including physical examinations, immunizations, dental documentation, medical orders, allergy information, and other required health records.
- Oversee medication administration procedures, including physician orders, parent/guardian authorizations, documentation, secure medication storage, medication counts, and expiration dates.
- Maintain current records for students with allergies, EpiPens, inhalers, medications, and other significant medical needs.
- Develop and maintain Individualized Health Care Plans (IHCPs) for students with complex medical needs, as appropriate.
- Conduct required school health screenings, including vision, hearing, and postural screenings.
- Provide direct nursing care and assessment to students as needed when on site.
- Train and support designated staff members responsible for administering student medications during the school day.
- Provide staff training and education related to student health needs, including EpiPen use, asthma management, diabetes care, seizure precautions, medication administration, and other relevant medical conditions.
- Provide required EpiPen reviews and training to staff throughout the school year.
- Educate staff regarding individual student health conditions and appropriate school-based supports.
- Collaborate with parents/guardians, teachers, administrators, physicians, and other healthcare providers to coordinate student health services.
- Update and maintain the school's Health Care Manual in collaboration with school administration and the school physician.
- Help ensure ongoing compliance with applicable Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) and Department of Public Health (DPH) requirements.
- Be available by phone during school hours for staff consultation regarding urgent student medical needs.
Seasonal Responsibilities:
While this position typically requires approximately 8–10 hours per month, additional hours are anticipated during key periods of the school year outline below.
June: Prepare student health information for the summer program, review the medical needs of new and returning students participating in the program, and provide health-related training to summer staff.
August–September: Beginning approximately August 1, review medical records for new and returning students, identify and follow up on missing documentation, prepare necessary health plans, coordinate medication needs, and ensure required student health information is in place for the start of the school year.
Qualifications:
Qualified Candidates Must Meet the Following Requirements:
- Valid certification as a School Nurse in Massachusetts, in accordance with local and state regulations.
- Bachelor's degree in Nursing or a related field.
- Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in Massachusetts.
- Strong knowledge of child health issues, immunization requirements, and medication administration protocols.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively with students, parents/guardians, teachers, administrators, and healthcare providers.
- Completion of Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH) requirements for school nurses, including the required 6.5 hours of training. Clearway School will compensate the selected candidate for this training time.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, particularly related to student health records, medication documentation, and regulatory requirements.
- Experience working with children or adolescents preferred.
- Previous school nursing or special education experience is a plus.
Compensation & Schedule:
- Hourly Rate: 70–85/hour, commensurate with experience and qualifications.
- Typical Commitment: Approximately 8–10 hours per month.
- On-Call Stipend: Additional $200/month for phone availability during school hours.
- Schedule: Flexible, with additional hours anticipated during June, August, and September.
